Retro Review: Streets of Rage 2 (Mega Drive)

Sometimes the box art for a game just draws you in, and you can’t resist picking it up. That was the case with Streets of Rage 2, something about it just screamed that it was going to be fun, and it was.

Once again, the streets have fallen into chaos. This time, Adam, one of the original three heroes, has been kidnapped by the villainous Mr. X. It’s up to Axel and Blaze to take on the syndicate once more, joined by Adam’s younger brother Skate and Axel’s wrestler friend Max. The four characters each bring their own fighting style, giving players more variety and strategy than ever before.

Right from the start, it’s clear that this sequel is a huge step up from the original. The visuals are brighter, more colourful, and full of life. Stages are no longer just simple left-to-right brawls, they’re packed with detail, movement, and atmosphere. The theme park level in particular stands out, showing how much more creative the level design had become.

Combat feels smoother and more responsive, with new moves that make every fight feel dynamic. The police backup from the first game is gone, replaced with special attacks that trade a little health for a burst of power and short invulnerability. There are new combos, throws, and dash attacks too, adding more depth and rhythm to every encounter. Enemies are more varied, with different abilities, attack patterns, and personalities no more endless palette swaps.

Even the audio has taken a big step forward. Every punch, kick, and crash lands with weight, and the music keeps the energy high from start to finish. It gives the game a pulse that matches the action perfectly.

Very few sequels manage to surpass the original in every way, but Streets of Rage 2 is one of them. It builds on everything the first game did right and turns it into something bigger, faster, and more exciting. Whether played solo or side by side with a friend, it’s one of the best examples of the beat-’em-up genre — and a classic that still holds up today.
